Fault-tolerant networks that protect the life and health of people
A shift is underway toward the comprehensive adoption of ICT in the healthcare industry. This includes electronic medical records, PACS (medical picture archiving and communication systems), and the use of electronic methods for billing and other healthcare administration.
While ICT brings many benefits including more efficient practices and better patient service, network system outages can severely impact medical care and other work. This makes the adoption of “fault-tolerant network” one of the most important considerations for IT systems in hospitals.
Other important factors include maintaining security on sophisticated hospital networks which handle personnel information and providing adequate bandwidth to ensure smooth transmission of data across the network, something made necessary by the large data volumes handled by medical imaging systems such as PACS.
Allied Telesis solutions include superior features such as bandwidth control technology to ensure that large volumes of image data can be sent and received smoothly together with redundancy and fault recovery capabilities to prevent problems before they occur. They also include numerous other technologies such as functions to prevent network outages caused by human error and security functions to block devices from accessing hospital networks without authorization. These are further complemented by operation monitoring and other maintenance support for around-the-clock operation to provide a total solution for medical networks that are “uninterruptible” as well as “secure and dependable”.
Building secure and reliable medical networks
Use of ICT in healthcare need not be limited to single institutions and is being extended to include sharing of clinical information through regional healthcare collaborations that mutually link a number of hospitals.
These regional healthcare collaborations allow sharing of patient information between the many different medical institutions on the network and bring a variety of benefits to both institutions and patients. However, installation and running costs become a problem if the system configuration for connecting between institutions uses large-scale equipment and dedicated lines to meet security, bandwidth, and other requirements. This has led people to consider using the Internet for regional healthcare networks because of its cost-effectiveness.
Because using the Internet for healthcare information networks requires security measures to prevent data leaks or other unauthorized access, virtual private networks (VPNs) in which the communication data are encrypted are used to provide secure links to each institution.
Allied Telesis has extensive experience with the high levels of security and reliability required for VPNs and is able to provide flexible solutions.
